My first encounter with a Dobermann was at University
in 1995. I was working behind the student bar and most
evenings a local man, Sid, who was an ex-Para, came into
for a drink with his Dobermann imported from Germany.
Sid’s dog was extremely obedient and obviously very
intelligent – he clearly had a mind of his own,
yet loved Sid. Many people commented that they felt both
an aura of both protection and loyalty. Sid and his dog
were well respected by everyone. I
was fascinated by this dog and thought all Dobermann
would be like him… and reading the breed standard
they should be but I was to discover that they were
not!
My first Dobermann was (and still is) Brindi
who I purchased in 2000 when living in Scotland.
Brindi
has been a wonder and her temperament is loving and
affectionate but she lacked the drive and the protection
that I had thought would be present in all Dobermann.
Brindi’s
temperament as a family pet is however flawless, she
is gentle and patient with children, excellent with
other dogs and was easily trained in the house. However,
she lacked any desire to pay with balls, squeaky toys
or rags and would hide behind me if there was any trouble!
Although Brindi
was bought as a pet, however her excellent temperament
as a pet led to the desire to breed from her and therefore
Lunascura Dobermann Kennel, (Lunascura is Italian
for 'Dark Moon') was officially established in 2004
After the first litter our interest in Dobermann grew
to include showing and working and hence breeding for
the requirements of form and temperament that this requires
Our first litters from Brindi helped us understand
better how pedigree’s work and what combinations
will result in. Hours and hours of research and work
went into looking through ancestors, health and ‘type’.
After much of this research we decided to import Vasco,
from France. Vasco is strong in Royal Bell bloodlines
that at that time were new to the UK.
While waiting for his pet passport, in Berlin, Vasco
started his Schutzhund training and he soon showed excellent
potential for working. As he is cropped he has not been
shown in the UK, however he has been shown abroad and
was made up to Maltese Champion while we were living
in Malta for a year.
Since then we have purchased two further imports Tess
and Ursula, and also Natrix in the UK. We have also
kept ties on a few of our own pups, which we are hoping
to have litters from later including keeping Fluvia
from our F-Litter.
Unlike many kennels we have had to move around due to
work commitments and are expecting to relocate back
into Europe for a year in the near future. Our focus
has been on Europe and not on the UK show scene as many
of our dogs are cropped (imports)
Through the last 8 years of owning, breeding and training
Dobermann we have come to the conclusion that breeding
is about 3 things – Health,
Temperament and Form. So many
people buy because there are 15 Champions in the pedigree
or because one parent is exceptionally good….
But too many dogs are dying young, and temperament is
important, not just as a pet but to follow the vision
of Herr Luis Dobermann the founder of this breed to
have a companion dog that is fearless and will protect
you.
In saying this, this temperament is stronger than those
we have seen in the UK for so long due to our small
gene pool and people buying from European bloodlines
need to know what they are buying and buy them for the
right reason.
We strongly believe in the principles of the ZTP (German
breed standard/ temperament test) and we aim to have
all our future pups eligible to do the ZTP as all our
litters are produced from parents with ZTPs. We are
also Accredited breeders under the UK Kennel club; a
scheme that we hope will be expanded to include a temperament
test of some fashion.
Due to the UK docking ban we have moved our kennel to
Ireland, although we still have a home in Cheshire where
we live when we are not abroad, where we invite people
to come and see our dogs if they are thinking of taking
on a Dobermann them selves in the future.
We have a very long waiting list for puppies and are
very selective about the homes were our dogs go. If
you would like to own a Lunascura Dobermann please call
us or email us and talk to us about why you are looking
for a dobermann, even if we don’t have a dog for
you we may be able to refer you to another reputable
breeder.
We hope you enjoy visiting our Site and please remember
to sign our guest
book.
